Bankhead Highway Visitor Center
1/4th mile west of intersection of State Hwy. 37 on West Main. Free Admission. Restored Thruston House 1868, home of Henry Clay Thruston, at 7 feet 7 and ½ inches the Tallest Soldier in the Confederate Army (and maybe of the Civil War).
Thruston lived a very long life to a giant and so he perhaps outlived other tall soldiers and his story of traveling with circus acts and returning to his family in Mount Vernon is well documented. The home is on the Bankhead Highway, an early transcontinental route from San Diego to Washington D. C. which opened in 1919. Quilting demonstration Wednesdays. Open five days and by appointment.
