Lake Cypress Springs was impounded in 1970 with 3,400 acres of top fishing waters. Walleye were stocked in the early days of the lake with some success. Black Bass and catfish are the prime targets of visting anglers. The waters of Lake Bob Sandlin back up to the dam on Cypress Creek. D Magazine calls Lake Cypress Springs the most beautiful lake in Texas (June 2000).
Lake Cypress Springs is surrounded by 869 acres of public parks owned and maintained by the Franklin County Water District. A day-use fee of $2 per person is collected for all park users over the age of 13. Local property taxpayers are not required to pay this fee if they obtain an exemption sticker for each of their vehicles (up to three). Stickers are available at the Water District office to eligible taxpayers.
Primitive camping sites are available for $10 per night. Primitive camping is free to with an exemption sticker.
A group pavilion is available at Walleye Park. The pavilion may be rented for $50 per day and has running water, picnic tables, grill and electrical outlets. An additional $25 deposit is required.
Shelters are available for $25 per night only at Walleye Park. Shelters include a screened in 12’ x 12’ area, two electrical outlets, running water, lights, a barbecue grill, and a picnic table. There is a $10 deposit.
Rental fees for camper sites vary, based on location, applicable discount and season. Walleye Park fees are $25 per night or $20 for senior citizens during summer months (between Memorial Day and Labor Day), and $10 during winter months. Guthrie Park fees are $25 per night or $20 for senior citizens during summer months. Guthrie Park is closed to camping during winter months.
All camper sites at the parks include a 14’ x 24’ concrete pad, water and electricity, a picnic table, fishing pier, and a barbecue grill. Reservations require advance payment for at least three nights for camper sites and two nights for shelters.
